Socialist Students fights on local, national and
international issues and is involved in different campaigns engaging
thousands of students. While fighting to ensure that any action called by
NUS is well-organised and successful, Socialist Students also fights to
transform NUS into a body reflecting the movement and being accountable to
it at all times.
But unlike the NUS leadership, Socialist Students has no
illusions that our local MPs will stand up and fight for students’ and
workers’ interests. We therefore initiate or help to build different
independent campaigns through our societies on campuses across England and
Wales (see list of societies below).
Socialist Students has been in the forefront of building the campaign
against fees, cuts, closures and privatisation in higher and further
education. We have organised petitions, meetings, lobbies, occupations and
walk-outs as well as joining trade unionists on their picket lines when in
disputes with employers over pay and conditions and for more public funding
into our institutions.
We are also involved in the anti-war/anti-occupation movement and have
organised demonstrations and strike action, calling on the lecturers and
other academic staff to join in, while ensuring there is enough pressure on
the local students’ unions and the national NUS to mobilise for such
campaigns with all their resources.
Socialist Students regularly organises meetings and debates in the
universities and colleges, do petitioning stalls outside our local students’
unions to take up the campaigns and contact trade union representatives for
support.
